My Life In Books, 2021

Last year I enjoyed reading all the My Life in Books posts from fellow bloggers, but since I didn’t register my reading back then (and hence didn’t remember which books I’d read), I found it difficult to participate. This year, however, I’m in!

In high school I was: Hungry [Grace Dent]
For knowledge rather than for food, although I did love good food as well.

People might be surprised by: One False Move [Harlan Coben]
So be careful…

I will never be: Frankenstein [Mary Shelley]
Whilst not being a stranger to drive and ambition, my common sense will always prevail (famous last words?)

My fantasy job is: An Unsuitable Job for a Woman [P.D. James]
I don’t think many jobs are unsuitable for women, but I tend to gravitate towards jobs/sectors which are dominated by men.

At the end of a long day I need: A Room With a View [E.M. Forster]
When living in Copenhagen, I had a lovely water view. There is nothing as relaxing as looking at the water. I wish I could find (read: afford) something similar in London.

I hate: Bewilderment [Richard Powers]
Yup. I like clarity and control! 😉

I wish I had: Five Little Pigs [Agatha Christie]
They might help me to let go of the above mentioned control issues! 🐷

My family reunions are: Unsettled Ground [Claire Fuller]

At a party, you’d find me with: The Family Upstairs [Lisa Jewell]
I just hope – unlike in the novel – that most of them are alive!

I’ve never been to: 84, Charing Cross Road [Helen Hanff]
Although, I often walk past it, I’ve never actually been inside. Unfortunately, it’s no longer a bookshop, but a McDonald’s.

A happy day includes: Love and Other Thought Experiments [Sophie Ward]
For sure!

The motto I live by is: Carry on, Jeeves [P.G. WodeHouse]
Or should that be “carry on, stargazer”? 🤔

On my bucket list is: How to Build a Universe [Brian Cox, Robin Ince]
I so wished, I properly understood science, but I’ll never give up!

In my next life, I want to have: The Thursday Murder Club [Richard Osman]
I don’t believe in reincarnation, but interpreting “next life” as retirement, solving mysteries with my best friends and eating cake sounds pretty good, eh?

My life in lockdown was: Such a Fun Age [Kiley Reid]
Spot the irony…

That was fun to do! Hope you enjoyed it as well and feel free to join in, I would love to read your version. If it wasn’t clear, the idea is just to answer all the questions, using a book title you’ve read during the year.

Happy New Year!

    • Thanks! 😀 I am very envious of your water view, there is something special about looking out on the water.

    • I did! It was very different from the versions known from popular culture. More slow and introspective. Anyway, my review should be up soon.

    • Thanks Rose! Yes, it’s sad about 84 Charing Cross Road. Very few of the independent bookshops have survived (although, I can’t really complain, since I’ve gone electronic myself). All the best for 2022!

  1. Happy New Year! This is a creative review. I like it very much although I have not read any of your books … Bewilderment and Thursday Murder Club is on my list for 2022.

    • Thanks and happy new year to you! Hope all is well! I hope you will enjoy these books, if you get to them in 2022. They were both 4 star reads for me.

    • Thanks Margaret. It isn’t very difficult as long as you keep a list of the books you’ve read.

  2. Clever post! I like how you did this. I hope to get into a reading state of Bewilderment …. 🙂

    • Thanks! I often get into a state of bewilderment, when reading, but in a good way! 😊

  3. Brilliant! I’ve actually got as far as making the list for this meme for the past two years but never posted either. Maybe this year? 🤔

    • Thanks Sandra. 😊 I have lots of unfinished drafts for posts lying about. Sometimes, I do finish them at a later time. This one is relatively quick to do.

    • I know! In a way it is rather typical indication of the way consumerism has changed over the years.

    • Yes, it’s sad about 84 Charing Cross Road, isn’t it. Glad you enjoyed the post!

    • Haha, yes hopefully we can soon get back to more normal conditions and look back at the lockdown years as an odd bit of history…

  4. Haha, fun answers! My retirement certainly includes much cake-eating but so far I haven’t been called upon to solve any mysteries. Maybe this year! 😀

    • Thanks FF, it’s such a fun tag. Haha, cake-eating may be the safer part of the Thursday Murder Club, but I hope a few fun mysteries may come your way as well!

    • I am glad you enjoyed it! I love a room with a view, both in the literal and the metaphorical interpretation. 🙂

  5. This one is unique and very interesting. Perfect responses with the book titles and their respective authors. I enjoyed reading it.

    • Thanks so much. I don’t know who came up with the idea first, but I think it’s a fun type of post.

  6. I log my books, but I’ve never done this. We read a couple of books in common last year, but I’m going to try to use different titles for mine. Thanks so much for sharing!

    • You are welcome! I think it’s such a fun tag, hope you will enjoy it, if you decide to go ahead!

    • That is indeed very sad. Unfortunately, most of the independent bookshops have disappeared from London. Still, I can’t really complain, since I mostly read electronically these days.
